Pound For Pound - Northern Pioneer |

Reviewed by Robert Laidlaw
Pound for Pound is a must have book for not only football lovers,
but those who enjoy the trials and tribulations of a life in and
out of the arena, which pulls no punches.
Written by Peter Cornwall and Ken Eustice, the book chronicles the
life of the latter, from his early days growing up in the Riverland,
to his sudden rise into the ranks of league football, including an
interesting and long chapter on the pioneering days of Central District
Football Club, when Ken was its inaugural coach.
Some of the facts uncovered for the book make interesting reading,
and is a good insight into how tough it was for the young Bulldogs
in 1964, the club's first season in the SANFL.
While Ken came to Elizabeth as a Magarey Medallists and established
state player, including as a member of South Australia's famous 1963
side which defeated the mighty Victorians on the MCG, his story of
that first year at Elizabeth contrasts amazingly with the now successful
club.
His frustration was such that as Central District was hunting for
its first win – any win – in 1964, he even considered
running an extra man on the field late in games to help even things
up for the side.
Then in 1965 the excitement as the club started winning games, and
the controversy of another club's supporter offering big dollars
for the Bulldogs to win a game late in the year to help his side
make the finals.
Besides the interesting and factual account of Central District's
first four years as a league club, the book has extensive chapters
on Ken's time at West Adelaide and Glenelg, his attempt at winning
the presidency of the SANFL, his successful business ventures – followed
by his fall from grace, and an honest account of his playboy lifestyle.
Written in an emotive style, which captures the essence of what
made Ken Eustice tick, this book is more than just reminisces of
a former football star, it is a life story which is poignantly told
in an inspiring manner, with many outside voices giving it credibility.
The book is a timely publication as a Christmas present, and is
available from Central District Football Club and various bookstores,
for $29.95. |

HURN MAKES A COMMITMENT TO FOOTBALL |
 |
|
10/8/2005 |
|
 |
By Peter Argent
In an era where young sportsmen have to make a choice
between their passions and pursuits, Shannon Hurn finally
made that ultimate decision about which endeavour that
will take precedence over the next few years of his
sporting life.
With a maturity, which would have made any parent proud,
Hurn, showed a moral judgement with many people a number
of years older would struggle to comprehend.
"I rang the Australian Cricket Board and informed
them, that because of my commitments to football at
Central District during September, I would not be available
to play in the under 19s National cricket side,"
Shannon said. "It's not totally set in cement,
as things can change over the coming months, but it's
looking like I will be moving down the track to the
AFL draft system." "The decision was hard
because I love both games and I've always committed
to each sport on a seasonal basis."
A member of the Central District 2004 League premiership
side last year, Hurn is honouring a commitment he had
with the Bulldogs over the last couple of seasons. He
was a member of the under 19s premiership side in 2003,
gaining best on ground honours and taking those first
vital steps towards fulfilling a stellar career at underage
level.
Needing to perform well in the last game of the under
18s national football championships, played from late
June, he played a superb game in the final clash against
Victorian Metro to ensure selection as an All-Australian
at this level.
His attitude and work ethic would make any parent proud.
Both William and Sandi have understood and managed the
stress and intensity which their son have had to deal
with and understandably would be pleased with the way
Shannon has handled all issues he has had to deal with.
He has also received tremendous support from all the
parties involved with his prompt progression in both
games.
"We had an arrangement with Shannon that during
the cricket season he would focus on his summer past
time and vica versa during winter, " Central District
CEO Kris Grant said. "He has stuck by a commitment
he made to us and this is a praiseworthy characteristic
which epitomizes the lad, as well as his parents and
extended family." "Shannon has obvious talent,
handling all the issues in front of him with a maturity
which underlines his great leadership qualities."
Hurn confirmed that he had regular discussions with
former Sheffield Shield cricket and Norwood footballer,
John Nash. He is a teacher at the Nuriootpa High School
and also was involved with his son Jay, when he went
through the same experience.
"John Nash, who is a councillor at our High School
(Nuriootpa) has been a fantastic sounding board for
both sport and life issues," Hurn explained. "The
SACA, Kris Grant at Centrals and Russell Thompson at
Northern Districts Cricket Club have all been understanding
as well. "Also my family and friends have been
extremely supportive."
If the local AFL club's didn't have enough motivation
to consider trading draft choices for this prospective
10-year plus top level footballer who is ready to play
at the top level now, Shannon confirmed that he would
love to stay in South Australia if at all possible.
About to turn 18 at the start of September, he is a
part of the first generation of footballers that have
only known our national code with an AFL team as a part
of the South Australian landscape.
"Because of my commitment to both sports I haven't
done a pre-season in the last five years," Hurn
said. "I guess I'll find out how hard they really
are." |

Bulldogs Flying the Flag at National
U18s Championships |
 |
|
9/7/2005 |
|
 |
By Peter Argent
A club which has a strong history of excellent performances
at the national under 18s championships, the class of
2005 again represented Central District with pride and
skill.
A member of the clubs four senior flag last year, Shannon
Hurn's sporting skills are well know and he continued
to distinguish himself at this carnival, leading the
side in Melbourne.
In the first up victory over Victorian Country he played
a true leadership role, playing as sweeper across half
back, gaining 16 possessions, although he was surprisingly
left out of the best players. Staring in defence in
the mid week match against Western Australia, he was
pushed to full forward at the start of the second half,
before being moved into the middle at the latter stages
of the game. Each of these moves was engineered to ignite
to Croweaters, but it was too big a task.
Needing to put in a solid effort in the final game,
Hurn started in the centre and after a slow start by
the team, he was the driving four behind the teams revival
with a magnificent long goal from well beyond the 50
metre arc in the second term. His 24-possession match
in the final game ensured he gained All-Australian honours.
An honour which culminates a brilliant junior football
career.
Hurn is the second Bulldog, after David Kellett to
gain All-Australian honours in the year they captained
the South Australian under 18's. Kellett was a dual
All-Australia in 2002 and 2003. In the second of those
two years, Power listed player and 'Dogs player Brad
Symes was also an All-Australian.
Alan "Alby' Obst, after being a member of Rob
Polito's under 17s premiership side last year has seen
dramatic improvements in his football career over a
short period of time. He has been playing in the reserves
during the majority of winter so far and has been an
unheralded but consistent performer at this level.
Obst was solid in the first game, having 17 possessions
at centre half back. Given the task on the highly touted
Mitchell Clark (who has been playing at centre half
forward for Claremont League team all season), Obst
kept him very quite all game until the final quarter,
where he kicked two goals in junk time, late in the
match. For his efforts in this game he was recognized
among the best players by the coaching staff.
Like Obst and the fourth member of the 'Dogs group
at this titles, Stephen Moss - Scott Dutschke was also
a member of the SANFL under 17s premiership last year.
He has had a meteoric rise over the last month after
making his league debut in the ill-fated match against
Norwood on that Sunday early in June. Not in the under
18s squad at this time, he forced his way into the squad
with a strong game in the next League match against
North Adelaide.
Dutschke gave the team some much-needed intensity around
the ball and although his emotions got the better of
him on game two, when he was provoked in the second
term. His best game was the opening fixture where he
had 10 possessions and kicked a goal in the final term.
Central United lad Stephen Moss played in only the
first and the third games, both played at Optus Oval
and off the bench each time. He got limited opportunities,
but showed good finishing skills, kicking a goal from
40 metres out in the final match.
A fifth player from the Bulldogs, Travis Varcoe didn't
make the trip to Melbourne although be was in the squad
of 30, because he could not overcome frustrating foot
problems. Both Varcoe and Moss are available to play
in the under 18s nationals this year.
If Shannon Hurn decides to pursue a career in football,
he will be a first round draft pick in this years' even
draft. For any team looking for a tall key defender
Alan Obst would be an excellent pick up. Expect him
to be collect at somewhere between 30-50, and at worse
be collected on a rookie list. |
