BULLDOG BUCKBY BURSTS TO LIFE

By ZAC MILBANK
SANFL High Performance manager Brenton Phillips has earmarked Central District utility Luke Buckby as an emerging AFL draft target in November.
Buckby, 191cm and 86kg, captured the attention of AFL scouts at Saturday’s SANFL Under-18 internal trial with an eye-catching performance through the midfield.
The Bulldogs teenager finished with 22 disposals and 10 marks while also showing off his ability at either end of the ground with three inside 50s and three rebound 50s.
Set to turn 18 on Friday, Buckby could follow in the footsteps of fellow Central product Sam Colquhoun, who starred in the corresponding practice match in February last year.
Colquhoun went on to be SA’s Most Valuable Player at the Under-18 National Championships before being selected by Port Adelaide in last year’s AFL pre-season draft.
If Buckby can continue his strong form throughout the year in the same manner as Colquhoun, he will only enhance his reputation after announcing his arrival in stunning fashion.
‘’He was the one who stood out for us,’’ Phillips said.
‘’We haven’t really seen a lot of Luke in the last couple of years but he really stood up and got a lot of the ball. He also used it well as he has an elite kick on him.
‘’He played down back to start with but then we pushed him into the midfield and if we can actually develop a 191cm midfielder, that’s something I’m looking forward to.’’
Phillips was also encouraged by the efforts of AIS scholarship holders Matt Scharenberg (21 disposals), Trent Dumont (17 disposals and seven tackles) and Luke Reynolds (21 disposals).
‘’They were all pretty good ,’’ Phillips said.
‘’Luke Reynolds was lively up forward, Dumont played through the midfield and his extraction from stoppages is very good. Matt Scharenberg is just a class act, we know he can play both ends of the ground but it was really good to see him run through the midfield.’’
Pacy Tom Gray – younger brother of Port Magpies midfielder Sam – was impressive with 21 disposals and six clearances while well-built North Adelaide forward Mitchell Harvey (102kg) was the game’s leading goalkicker with five.
The SANFL Under-18s will now head back to their clubs to prepare for this year’s Macca’s Cup competition before the final state side is selected in April.
‘’Our first trial match will be on May 11,’’ Phillips said.
‘’So from here, I will spend a week with each of the Macca’s Cup teams which will give me a good indication of the talent which is out there.’’

Three other Bulldogs we're in the squad. They are Darcy Hamon, Jackson Baldwin and Bradley Bain.
