HARBS’ RANT

Every so often we receive some information from the inner sanctum. Often light hearted it is an insight into our Playing group and the banter that goes on.

HARBS’ RANT
G’Day Doggies Fans,
Welcome to another new season in 2014 where we hope to climb the ladder and re-build from a disappointing 5th place finish in 2013. After starting 0 – 4 we started to find some momentum that we just couldn’t capitalize on in the finals.
Since 2010, our playing group has had a heavy turnover and this year has required signing up numerous recruits for the 2014 season. Since the 2010 Premiership we have 5-6 players still playing and an abundance of young talent coming through. The up and coming youngsters we have had go through the Robert Zerella Junior Academy and enter onto the senior track over the past 2 years has been fantastic. Guys like Travis ‘I’m better than my bruz’ Schiller, Caleb ‘Glove’ Edmead, Cooper ‘Rex Hunt’ Stoll, Jackson ‘Nightshift’ Baldwin, Darcy ‘Prawns’ Hamon, Pat ‘Clappers’ White, Joel ‘Fozzy’ Foster, Brae ‘Brazer’ McConnell, Joey ‘Skills to pay the bills’ Brown, Josh ‘Protein Ambassador’ Banks and Dylan ‘Cool Cat’ Weaver are just a few players worthy of keeping track of their progress throughout the next couple of years.
A lot of sad news has happened since my last update in August, 2013. In a sad year for the club we have lost great men who have served the football club in a manner that we are all indebted to. Les Stevens, Robert Zerella, Norm Russell, Merv Starkey and Neville Deer all had different roles that they played within the football club but are names every CDFC player, sponsor and supporter over the last 50 years would know.I had most to do with Les Stevens in my short stay at the club – he gave myself and Kyle Jenner employment in his son, Wayne Stevens business (Ensson – a CDFC sponsor who are office chair manufacturers). I will miss the banter that he always threw around in the workplace and at the football club.
Only in the last few days the news about Holden has spread quickly and looms as a dark day for the Northern Suburbs. Holden has been the heartbeat of the Central District area as well as the outskirts, providing so many families with employment and good memories over the last 50+ years. One of the longest sporting partnerships looks set to end by 2017, it will be sad not to see the great Holden name on the front of our guernsey.
Trying to put 2013 behind us, the 2014 season cannot come quick enough! Our round 1 fixture has been set where we are to face the Eagles on their home deck. The Eagles look to be a front runner as a team to beat in 2014 and what better way to start the season!
Roy and the coaching staff have really put the foot down since our first pre-season session on the 25th November and training has been of a really hard/high standard with a lot of new faces out on the track. These new faces include underage players, players from country leagues and of course new recruits. Of the new recruits we have Timmy McIntyre (ex Adelaide Crow) training the house down. This bloke is an absolute machine when it comes to running and has a decent rig to match it. Ben Mabon (ex Nth Melbourne), Bryce Retzlaff (ex Brisbane/Box Hill) and Justin Hoskin (ex Port Adelaide) are all making steady progress as well and all these recruits are great people and will be assets to CDFC on and off the field. The usual fit eggs like Thommo, Willo and Sammy Hanna are dominating as well as young Patty ‘Clappers’ White.
As always with this little write up a few of the players do not get away with any misdemeanors or humerous things that you should know about! Where can I start because there is a long list:
Kyle ‘Fat Boy’ Jenner and Trent ‘I Love Cruskit’ Goodrem’s personal relationship has hit a whole new level as both are in the ‘fat club’. The ‘fat club’ is a very special boys club that you do not want to be in! If your skinfolds at the club are over a certain level you are in the ‘fat club’!
Unfortunately we have lost Tim ‘Melondick’ Meulendyks back to the Victorian country. The young buck just missed the country life too much and is settling back in Hamilton, Victoria with his family. He will be missed around the footy club as his changeroom banter was something that needed to be heard to be believed. He may also be the only footballer I will ever see over the age of Under 8’s to still use Johnson and Johnson baby powder after he showers!
This means I have a new housemate – Jackson Potter, who happens to be my work colleague! If you happen to see me put one on Pottsy’s beak throughout the year at any time it probably the fact that we are in each other’s pockets 24/7! He is a great fella and has bought his dog ‘Jett’ to our home which is a great addition.
James Gowans and his lovely wife Christie have had a little girl – Maya Gowans. I hope for Maya’s sake that James decides to give her at least half the amount of attention that he gives his dog ‘Harvey’ and she will be one spoilt girl!
Yves ‘Evil’ Sibenaler has tied the knot with his lovely partner, Amy. The big fella was also on the SA fireman’s calendar for 2013 – it is true that he spent numerous extra hours in the gym sculpting his body so that he got the cover page!
I also thought I would throw in a few ‘get to know your doggies’ profiles:
#2 – Caleb ‘Glove’ Edmead. This bloke is a real up and comer and should see numerous games of league footy next year. He is lightning quick and has turned into a powerful player that has developed a good fitness base over the last year. You wouldn’t miss his love of standing out in a game wearing the 2 gloves and bright coloured boots! Caleb and I share a distinct love for fishing and can’t get enough of a TV series called ‘River Monsters’ which is a belter! Also, if anyone needs a fill in specialist fielder for a cricket team get hold of Caleb because he battles with batting and bowling but claims he is ‘Ricky Ponting’ in the field.
#40 – Jackson ‘Terrible Fashion’ Baldwin. As most of you would have seen, ‘Baldy’ had a standout year in the Reserves and will be pushing for League selection in 2014. The wirey built youngster from Nuriootpa may not be the biggest bloke but gees he has a mouth on him. Loves to get in and mix it with the big boys in the gym (guys that don’t include myself, Joey Brown, Ben Nason etc). His fashion on the other hand is a disgrace – correct me if I’m wrong but why the bloody hell would wearing a beanie with a singlet, shorts and thongs be fashionable! Baldy, it isn’t bloody cold wear a hat!
#14 – Cameron ‘Boof’ Milne. One of the nicest blokes you will ever meet with one of the best beards going around at the moment. If you have been down to pre-season training you would not have recognized him! He is as fit as a fiddle and thrives on all forms of training whether it be running or weights. ‘Boof’s’ only issue is that him and Matty White (who will cop a spray in the next paragraph) never separate! Roy has even, in training drills had to pull them apart so that they compete in different groups!
#53 – Matty ‘Dream Big, Lift Bigger’ White. The younger brother of ex CDFC player Nick White, Matty has really come out of his shell the last year and is playing some great football and becoming very reliable. Thoroughly deserved playing in his debut late in 2013 and look for him to man a key post down back in the future. Matty is the kind of bloke that I love hanging around. On the training track he is fairly quiet and goes about his business but whenever he steps into our Gym he becomes an arrogant pest/personal trainer/annoying lunatic that thinks he is Hercules and can out-lift ‘Anyone Anytime Any Weight’ as he puts it!
Well that will just about to do for the first segment of 2014. Until we get some more dirt on our new recruits and get to know them better I will dish out some information then. We return on Wednesday 8th January to training so make sure you come down and check out the new boys at training.
Until then have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

While Trent Goodrem used to have the honours, his good mate Luke Habel these days puts pen to paper for us:

G’Day Doggies Fans,

Holden has been the heartbeat of the Central District area as well as the outskirts, providing so many families with employment and good memories over the last 50+ years. Lets hope our community can stay strong and people can use the Football Club as a meeting point, come to games in 2014 and enjoy each others company no matter how tough times might be.

Trying to put 2013 behind us, the 2014 season cannot come quick enough! My peeping over Kris' shoulder suggests our round 1 fixture is to face the Eagles on their home deck. The Eagles look to be a front runner as a team to beat in 2014 and what better way to start the season!
