2017 Round 15 Centrals vs North Adelaide

DOGS GRIND OUT WIN
By Robert Laidlaw

Central District has given the 2017 SANFL wooden spoon a wide berth after beating North Adelaide at Elizabeth by 11 points, to also mathematically still remain in the finals equation.

With three rounds remaining, the Bulldogs have to beat Norwood at the Parade, Westies at home and the Eagles away, while relying on Glenelg to drop all three of its games, against South, North and West – highly unlikely.

Two crucial periods set up Central's victory against the Roosters, an attacking 15 minute burst just after half time – led by a purple patch by John Butcher – and a dour final 10 minutes of the game, where the Dogs desperately shut North down.

Kicking with the wind, Central nailed three first quarter goals, but surrendered two, in a disappointing opening, where skill errors were hurting the home side – and the visitors – in low standard contest.

It was more of the same in the second term, with Kyle Jenner nailing a goal in the first minute for the home side, then North played catch-up footy the rest of the period, for the scores to be locked at 4-5 each at the long break.

Darcy Fort was dominating in ruck, which saw the likes of Chris Jansen, Nick Holman and Travis Schiller get plenty of ball forward, but too often chances went begging on a misdirected pass, or a kick to the opposition – it wasn't pretty.

But some system came in to the Bulldog “machine” in the third term, as Butcher came alive with two great goals in the first six minutes, and did some other creative work.

Isaya McKenzie booted a lovely two bounce running goal 13 minutes in, then 60 seconds later, “Butch” gave a slick handball to Luke Habel, who snapped the goal of the game, for Central's lead to be out to 26 points.

North kicked a goal into time on, as the Bulldogs went into lemons with a handy 8-10 to 5-6 advantage.

Although Central had several opportunities to ice the game early in the last term, some easy misses left the Roosters in the contest, and when they kicked their third goal of the final stanza at the 16 minute mark, the Dogs were holding on to a precarious four point lead.

Some great play saw Justin Hoskin take an unopposed mark straight in front of goals a few minutes later, while desperation from every Central player on the field ensured the lead would hold up and the Bulldogs would claimed the victory.

It was hard to find too many four-quarter performers on the day, although most players had good cameos at various times, with Darcy Fort in ruck, and the “three amigos” in the midfield – Holman, Jansen and Travis Schiller – outstanding again.

Now for Norwood at the Parade next Saturday.
