2017 Round 17 Centrals vs West Adelaide

By Robert Laidlaw

By doing what it had to, and beat West Adelaide comfortably at Elizabeth in SANFL football on Saturday, 15-16 to 7-10, Central District is still a possibility of playing finals footy in 2017, which, although still unlikely, is at better odds than over the past few weeks.

With Sturt beating South and North surprising Glenelg, the equation is: Central must beat the Eagles next week, West needs to triumph over Glenelg, and either the Eagles on Sunday or the Panthers next week need to take care of business with Adelaide – a tough ask, but who knows?

Against West, the Bulldogs played similar type footy as it did against Norwood the previous week, in the second and last quarters, but did not start well and also was off their game in the third term.

After the Bloods booted the first goal of the game, at the nine minute mark, Justin Hoskin had the quick answer – his first of seven sausage rolls for the day – and six minutes later Central grabbed a seven-point advantage when John Butcher kicked truly.

But a couple of goals to West leading into time on saw the visitors go ahead, with just three behinds all the Dogs could manage to the break, to trail 2-4 to 3-1.

Hoskin opened the scoring in the second term with his second major, and after West answered, it was all Central from the 10 minute mark, kicking the next five goals to go into half time with an 8-6 to 4-6 lead.

Hard working Nick Holman provided the start of the run, when Josh Waldhuter finished off with a classy major, but the goal of the game came later, when Kyle Jenner managed a clever tap to Holman, whose curling snap dissected the goals just into time on of the first half.

While Hoskin again kicked the first goal of the quarter in the third term, three minutes in, it was the only Doggies major for the period, as West climbed back into the contest, with 3-2, while the home side struggled to find the gap between the big white uprights, with a return of 1-5, to only lead by 15 points at lemons.

But fear not, there was no way Central was going to let this game slip, and a return of 6-5 to 0-2 in the final stanza demonstrated the Dogs superiority, with Hoskin kicking three goals in the term, including the first – an unusual feat for one player to boot the first major for his side in every quarter of a game.

A feature of the match was the contested marks taken by Hoskin and Darcy Fort, who were the Bulldogs best two, with the former providing a wonderful target up front, while the latter added authority to his already dominant rucking effort.

Chris Jansen's class, Holman's grunt, and Travis Schiller's in and under work at the packs, complimented each other's game in another spectacular effort by this trio at the stoppages.

Luke Barmby continued on from the previous week with another fine effort out of defense, with the forward momentum he created with his run off half back a telling contribution.

Murray Stephenson was a rock in the backline, while Josh Glenn looked dangerous all game, and Trent Goodrem provided his normal solid captain's game, where he leads by example with his clever work all around the ground.

Now for Central to play its part in creating a miracle run to the finals in 2017, by upsetting top team Woodville West Torrens, at Woodville, next Saturday.
