2017 Round 4 Centrals vs Glenelg

Hard Working Dogs Go Down

By Robert Laidlaw

There definitely was a level of disappointment with Central District losing its SANFL round four clash at Glenelg against the Tigers by five points, but at least the effort from the previous week was maintained with a hard-working effort.

The game was an old fashion slog, as two determined teams battled it out for the day's honours, with the Bulldogs looking like winners after a solid second quarter, before an even third term, and a more determined Glenelg squeaked home after a masterful final stanza.

Justin Hoskin gave Central the early advantage with the opening goal, before the Tigers responded at the 11 minute mark. Trent Goodrem again put the Dogs ahead just before time on for the lead, before the Tigers answered to go 2-3 to 2-1 up at the first break.

Glenelg extended its lead early in the second quarter, before John Butcher responded, then a pair of Goodrem majors around a Tiger goal saw Central back in front, with late six-pointers to Butcher and Hoskin seeing the visitors out to a 7-3 to 4-5 lead at half time.

A pair of majors early in the third quarter saw Glenelg close the gap to six points, before the dynamic duo – Hoskin and Goodrem – answered, then after a run of three behinds, Jack Hannath nailed an important goal, for a 26 point advantage.

Unfortunately the Tigers had the last laugh in the dying seconds of the third term with a momentum-shifting goal, to see Central's lead reduced to 20 points, 10-9 to 7-7 at lemons.

With their tails in the air, Glenelg ran riot in the first five minutes of the final stanza, kicking two majors, before some good team-work and hard running saw Luke Barmby kick the goal of the game – for a 13-point lead at the nine minute mark.

But the tide had turned and the Tigers refused to surrender, booting three consecutive majors after a point to go a a goal up entering time on.

A gripping five minutes saw desperation from both sides, as the ball was continuously in dispute, with every attempt to set up some forward momentum smothered, until a loose ball came out to Matt Prior, whose flying shot from outside 50m drifted through for a behind.

Just five points down and a possible victory with one goal, but it did not come, as the siren signalled the end of a great game of footy by two evenly matched sides.

Prior played probably his best game at league level, with 12 telling marks, many deep in defense, and helped set up some important forward thrusts out of the backline, with plenty of help from the likes of Barmby and Luke Habel.

Up front Goodrem and Hoskin were constant threats, while Nick Holman was the Bulldogs hardest working on-baller.

Next Saturday Central will host Norwood before a bye, which makes beating the Redlegs a must, before the challenge of competing for a top three spot gets to far out of reach.
