2017 Round 5 Centrals vs Norwood

By Robert Laidlaw

It looks like being a long season for Central District supporters, after a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde performance against Norwood in losing by 24 points at Elizabeth on Saturday, to drop to a one-win, four-loss start to the 2017 campaign.

At the 14 minute mark of the second quarter, Josh Glenn gathered a ball in dispute, and with a wonderful 40m snap, kicked the goal of the game to give the Dogs a 10-5 to 4-1 lead (40 points), and it looked like Central District by how far?

But for the final 15 minutes of the first half and first 12 minutes of the third quarter, Norwood kicked nine goals to just one from the home side, to see the Redlegs grab the initiative, and it never looked back.

While Robert Louis Steven's dark account of Dr Jekyll suits the Bulldogs case on Saturday, another of his books, Treasure Island could be the tale Central need to follow to play finals footy now.

In all four of the Bulldogs losses this season they have been in a position to win, but capitulated late, with the Norwood game the worst example of a game there for the taking slipping away.

The first 15 minutes of the opening term saw both teams score three goals, the highlight Sam Milne's great snap.

Then into time on Nick Holman nailed a major, followed by an interesting three minutes, where Kyle Jenner handed out a goal, was felled and converted before the ball was returned to the centre, then booted another after the ball was delivered straight out of the middle.

Leading 7-4 to 3-0 at the first break, the Bulldogs answered an early second quarter goal by the Redlegs with the next three – including a pair from the Fort brothers Darcy and Fraser, before Glenn's piece of magic.

Norwood then got on a roll, booting the next five majors before Jenner kicked his third just before half time, as Central led 11-5 to 9-1 and appeared to have absorbed the Redlegs charge.

But the third term continued the heartache for Doggie supporters, as two misses were replied with by Norwood goals, and before Central managed its first second half major at the 15 minute mark, the Redlegs booted two more six-pointers, and another two before lemons, to trail 12-8 to 15-4.

It was a horror run for the home side, as so many opportunities were missed – highlighted by John Butcher's effort, where he mark the ball near the goalsquare, played on and kicked truly, but was forced to re-take the kick – and missed!

Norwood booted the first four goals of the final term before Central managed a couple of late majors, as the Redlegs won 19-6 to 14-12.

Darcy Fort was solid in ruck all day for the Dogs and had 35 hit outs, while Jarrod Schiller (10 tackles) and Holman (seven) were hard at it, laying plenty of tackles. Glenn was also a spark, especially when Central looked dangerous around goals.

Two of the Bulldogs key attacking weapons, Justin Hoskin and Butcher, were obviously carrying leg injuries in the second half, which robbed the side of some of its forward potency, while the lack of consistent clearances from the stoppages proved costly.

Central has the bye this week, before hosting South Adelaide on May 20.
