2017 Semi Final

MIXED FEELINGS IN DOGS LOSS

By Robert Laidlaw

Central District fought valiantly before going down by seven points – 11-13 to 13-8 – to Sturt in the SANFL first semi final at Adelaide Oval, to end the Bulldogs' fairytale run.

There were mixed feelings after the game – disappointment at the magical run ending, but pride in the way the battling Bulldogs fought out the game tooth-and-nail, in spite of falling being in every quarter before fighting back.

In the first term Central trailed by 15 points going into time on, but was only a goal down at quarter time, in the second quarter the Dogs fought back after Sturt kicked the first two goals to be just eight points down at the long break.

Then in the third quarter Sturt led  by 25 points before another fightback reduced the margin to just two points at lemons, and in the final stanza, Central recovered after the Double Blues kicked the first three majors, to finally go down by seven points.

Perhaps one of the issues that cost the Bulldogs in the end was accuracy, with more scoring shots than Sturt, as well as kicking out of bounds too many times, including three consecutive shots in the third term.

And Sturt won the clearances from the centre easily, in spite of Central winning the rucks, which was a major reason for the Double Blues leading from start to finish, and in the end, the deserving winners.

Different players stood up at different times for Central, which helped key the many fightbacks.

In the first quarter, Sam Hanna stood tall and was a major thorn in the Double Blues side, winning some key 50-50 balls in Central's defensive end.

The second term saw John Butcher create some magic, first with a magnificent checkside goal, then a left foot snap from nowhere, for both of the Doggies majors in the period.

Darcy Fort dominated the air in the third term, especially through the time on period, where, after Central kicked three consecutive out of bounds, he stopped Sturt clearing the ball, which led to Josh Glenn's magnificent across his body snap for 'goal of the game' to reduce the margin to just two points at lemons.

After Sturt went 20 points up in the last term, the effort of Glenn to continue to run on and “bust a gut” to help the Doggies back into the game was terrific.

Another special mention to Sam Milne, who's exceptional gutsy efforts in backing into a pack and flying high were inspirational.

Glenn was a stand-out again for Central, and over the finals, was the Bulldogs best overall, while Trav Schiller and Darcy Fort were also solid contributors.
