2018 Round 19 Central District v Eagles
DOGS FINISH EARLY
By Robert Laidlaw
For just the third time since 1992, Central District has finished its SANFL season in the minor round, with no finals action in 2018 after losing its round 19 clash to the Eagles by 26-points.
It was a slow start for the Bulldogs, but with scoring goals tough, they were able to keep pace to be just four points down at quarter time.
The main difference in the second term was that the Eagles were able to convert their advantages in field play to goals, with five majors to just one to Central, to earn a 7-6 to 3-5 lead at the long break.
A bit of push and shove after the half time siren saw emotions run high, which probably fired up the Dogs.
With Darcy Fort lifting in ruck and John Butcher going into the middle, Central looked a different team in the third quarter and fought back to trail by just 13 points at lemons.
Luke Barmby had a purple patch through the period, first setting up a major through his run and carry, then booted the goal of the game, after bursting through a pack, dodging a couple of opponents and snapping a left foot special.
With nothing to play for, Central may have struggled for motivation to finish the game on a high, with the Eagles rewarded for working harder to win 13-11 to 9-9.
There was one highlight in the final stanza that will leave supporters with something to savour, when Sam Hanna took a sensational mark at half back after a huge leap.
Travis Schiller played another great game and will be the Club's best chance in the Magarey Medal count.
